REFINED REMODEL

CLEAN ROOM.

Matte white lacquer cabinets with marble-effect porcelain counters and matching slab backsplash set a clean scene in the kitchen. Combining the two islands into one—with a contrasting wood tabletop—allows natural light to wash over the whole room.

OPEN BAR.

Adjacent to the kitchen, the family room features a recessed bar center for added convenience. The grayish brown base cabinet provides extra storage while open shelving for glassware floats above against a gray tile backsplash.

CONTRAST EFFECT.

Once left in the shadows, the fireplace now provides a much-needed focal point in the living room. Its dark-stained mantle and new black granite hearth pop against the surrounding white walls and trim.

SCREEN TIME.

In the den, a slim 48-inch fireplace integrates seamlessly into the wall below the television—both framed in black. A narrow column of built-in glass shelves to the right creates a gracious display tower.

SPA PACKAGE.

To create a more serene environment in the primary bath, a pale gray floating vanity with raised top and matching vessel sinks replace the existing heavy, built-in cabinetry. To the right, open glass shelves create an airy space for extra storage.

SHOWER TREATMENT.

Upgraded fixtures, including a large waterfall showerhead and body sprays, maximize the shower’s therapeutic value to both homeowners.

BLUE SKY BATH.

A gracious freestanding tub now sits beneath the once underutilized skylights for the ultimate bathing experience. Crisp white details throughout complete the bathroom makeover.

REFINED REMODEL

INSIDE THE LINES. The owners of a traditional home in suburban Virginia were eager to modernize—without stepping outside its original footprint. For starters, playing up the home’s existing features made this an especially effective remodel. With an emphasis on flow and function, the refined plan ultimately creates open, airy spaces where the family can gather, relax, and entertain their extended family and friends.
