Age + Beauty

A newly retired couple wanted to age in place. So the pair of art collectors set out to create the functionality they needed without sacrificing the contemporary style they loved. The home’s sculptural, stainless staircase now transforms the foyer into a welcoming gallery space. A discrete elevator—tucked around the corner—offers convenient access to the master suite above and the lower level.

Careful mechanical changes and meticulous material selection combined to create this hard-working modern kitchen with ageless appeal. Glossy gray lacquer and smoky glass cabinets—with a striking marble backsplash and counter—fit snugly along one wall. The island’s matte gray cabinets and granite counters balance against the welcoming walnut-topped bar, which measures nearly seven feet for ample seating.

Eliminating an awkward angled wall improved connectivity to adjacent dining and family rooms while strategic wall punches conceal pipes that had to be relocated to open up the space. The captured space also made way for wider aisles, additional storage, and a complete suite of professional-style appliances.

Reshaping walls in the dining room eliminated angles that interrupted flow while introducing dramatic niches to display the clients’ art collection. A sleek stainless steel handrail lining the upper-level gallery provides an uninterrupted view to additional artwork above.

Openings between rooms on the first floor were moved and enlarged to create new views, like this one into the family room’s striking fireplace wall. Simple niches create display space for media and art alike.

A discrete elevator—tucked in a corner near the family room—arrives in the vestibule of the master suite (as pictured). It also delivers the homeowners to the lower level’s entertainment and exercise center.

From every angle, this master bathroom testifies to a couple’s love for organic materials—and contemporary design. It also proves that neither has to be cold or hard. Marble walls glow straight through the large, frameless glass shower, with requisite plumbing neatly concealed within a limestone water column. A solid white cube provides safe seating inside the shower stall, extending beyond for alternate use.

A frosted glass pendant and powder-coated sinks float effortlessly above the dark double vanity. Storage below and lift-up, mirrored cabinets above keep bath essentials organized and within reach. Modern art finds a comfortable frame in a carved-out niche.

A silky smooth tub stands like sculpture beneath a picture window, direct set for clean lines and visibility. A stunning view of a golf course awaits.

The warmth of the organic palette extends into the guest bathroom, where honed Carrara marble flows down the walls to cover the floors. Damask-pattern accent tiles frame a simple rectangular mirror behind a striking modern crystal chandelier.
