Point of View
The owners of this four-bedroom condo in one of DC’s most famous complexes couldn’t pass on the chance to move up. As current residents—in a smaller unit on a lower floor—the couple had already completed one successful CARNEMARK renovation. So why not repeat the process to capture those coveted fourth-floor views?
Like most condos, the landmark building came with its share of challenges, including obtrusive structural columns, surprise ductwork, and its distinctive curved exterior walls.
In the kitchen, a simple palette of walnut and white cabinetry conceals appliances while providing ample storage. The peninsula extends into an open dining and living area, where the same rich brown luxury vinyl flooring contrasts against white walls.
Crisp white drawers bases flank the stainless gas range while minimal cabinetry above conceals the exhaust hood and provides added storage. The facing island—with white ultra-compact quartz top—makes room for pull-up seating.
The kitchen opens into the dining and living area beyond. A pair of rectangular punches—made in the void of a bulky column—becomes clever display space that also helps the owners keep their eyes on the condo’s panoramic prize.
To preserve views and balcony access, the bedrooms maintain the minimalist vibe from the main living area. Additional storage was created wherever possible, with fully outfitted closets behind frosted glass sliding doors.
In the office, floating walnut shelves serve as both storage and display while echoing the walnut cabinetry in the kitchen. Track lighting maximizes the ceiling height throughout.
In the master bath, a straightforward combination of white vanity, polished chrome fixtures, and gray porcelain flooring establishes a clean palette. The open shower with a single floor-to-ceiling glass panel creates a focal point. With an eye toward both function and future, the striking shower features a curbless entry, long bench, and hand shower in addition to the ceiling-mount showerhead.
