Giving It Punch

Meal prep, homework, snack time—the creamy manufactured-stone surface of the kitchen island accommodates it all, as well as introduces a clean counterpoint to the darker perimeter countertops and cabinetry.

When the need to open up space met structural challenges, equal parts of creativity and care came into play. The load-bearing wall had to stay, and moving plumbing and HVAC would blow the budget. Instead slices of walls became coordinating design elements—punching out a display niched in one and nesting a TV in the other.

A wall of cabinets looks smooth and elegant in rich brown lacquer and integrated handles. Ensuring a place for everything: dual pantry cabinets flanking the stainless wall oven and microwave, long and deep pullout drawers under the cooktop, and a stainless appliance garage on the counter.

A family computer/communication center tucked behind the bright TV wall keeps essentials easy to reach without disturbing the area’s traffic flow.
